Hard work, love of family and giving back were the constants in Jim Althoff’s life.
He had a deep love of family, sharing his life with Joan for 62 years. They raised seven children together in McHenry. He was often seen at the edge of the happy family chaos that ensued on holidays with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye!
His caring extended to his community as well. He was a founding member of the McHenry Township Volunteer Fire Department and was President of the Fire District for twenty years. He served for a dozen years on the District 156 School Board, most of them as President. Though he never attended college, he was named to the Board of Governors of Illinois State Universities and served for eleven years.
In addition to building his family and his community, he also built a business. From humble beginnings in the basement of his father’s hardware store in 1961, Althoff Industries remains a highly successful and well respected mechanical/electrical contracting firm to this day.
JL’s passing leaves a legacy of service and generosity. He donated land for a park in McHenry as well as the funds for basketball courts open to everyone. He was deeply loved and is deeply missed by his wife, his children and his 13 grandchildren.
